Fruit Tree Pruning & Tree Care Workshop

Fruit Pruning & Tree Care Workshop

It’s pruning time! Join Thomas or AJ, our apple tree experts, for a workshop on how to care for your fruit trees. Thomas and AJ both have years of experience growing and caring for the apple trees at Tuttles.  They oversee the care of over 17,000 apple trees, which consists of 30 different varieties.  Proper pruning is important as it will lead to an overall improved quality of your fruit trees and help minimize diseases.  They will teach you the do’s and don’ts of pruning. A demonstration may be held in the orchard where they will demonstrate the best techniques for home fruit tree pruning.  They will also discuss general tree care, which includes a discussion on spraying and thinning. Bring your questions about your own home fruit trees.  This is a casual workshop, so questions are encouraged. This will be approximately a 2 hour workshop.

Dates and Times:  Saturday, March 29 from 9 to 11am

Location:  Tuttle Orchards – 5717 North 300 West, Greenfield, IN, USA - Meet at the Shed.  You will walk between the Greenhouse and Cafe to get to The Shed.  Dress for the weather, we may be outside even if it’s cold or raining.

Cost:  $10 per person. (We must have a minimum of 10 participants or this class may be canceled.)

When I entered the venue, I was greeted and shown courtesy. I had several expectations: How to prune, what pesticides and fungicides were recommended, what is the best schedule for applying pesticides and fungicides, and how to care for the health of the trees, and how to maximize production.

I was pleased with the demonstration of the proper pruning but an illustration handout would have enhanced the demonstration.

What I don't understand was why there were not handouts naming the recommended pesticide and fungicide products. The presenter said what the products were but I was scrambling to write them down and get them spelled correctly. It was difficult to hear the presenter because of the rain pounding on a metal roof, but a handout would have solved that problem.

It would have been very helpful to receive a handout with a schedule of caring for the trees..

One handout had listed some resources, but only names were given when websites would have beeb very helpful.

So much valuable information was included in the presentation, that was very poorly presented. May I suggest before the next workshop, an educator be allowed to observe a rehearsal presentation and make suggestions to facilitate the topics and ideas that were being covered.

It was raining!

We figured it was canceled due to all the rain!

Fruit Trees & Greenhouse

Thomas was excellent. Great show and tell inside. Answered all questions thrown at him. The tour outside was excellent also. My biggest issue coming in was spraying the fruit trees. All those questions answered. I currently have 10 fruit trees and plan on planting 7 more this spring. Probably gonna attend your fruit tree class again next year. See you’ll when it’s strawberry time!
